Hello, I love your home! This is my dream house. I am a younger person starting to design my first home on my family farm. It has been a bit overwhelming/very exciting and I am getting numerous design ques from your home. The proportions, front porch, stone patio, roof line and window sizes are amazing. I was just wondering if you would divulge the window sizes (width and height) for the casement and double hung windows on your first floor? I would really appreciate it.

I am curious what construction method was used for the building envelope (IE: 2×6 with rigid foam wrap, something else) and what your energy usage is like? It seems like a really nice space efficient design!

It has helped us to envision our own home building project process. One more question… I am curious if the front porch blocks the sun from entering the house in the winter? We really want a farmhouse front porch like this, but are concerned that we won’t have as much sun to help warm the room during the winter if we put it on the south. We’re at about the same latitude as you. Thanks!
The architect spent a great deal of time on that porch design, making sure that the depth and height would keep the house bright. I’ll add that the windows/door design are equally important to winter light. Just for example, that door is 7′ 9″(ish). We thought it was a bit “much” when we saw the spec, but it makes a HUGE difference.
Hi! I have spent my entire morning reading your entire blog. I realize I am a little late to the game, but I have searched high and low for house plans after recently purchasing 15 acres on a farm. I have fallen in LOVE with you house, and that’s an understatement. I see you have a “house plans” tab, but was wondering if you could send the detailed set? I’m meeting with our builder this Friday and would love to show him these as a start. The sq footage of your home is what we are looking for. With a 4 month old baby and possibly one more kid, this house seems to be the perfect size, although we could possibly benefit from one more bedroom/flex space for play. I would truly appreciate you getting back to me.
First and foremost, thank you. Those are very kind words. And unfortunately, I can’t share the detailed plans. We worked with our architect to establish the level of detail posted on the blog and what you’re seeing is as far as we can go. But we’d highly recommend Whitten & Associates. They did an incredible job.

That’s truly a tough question to answer. For just the two of us, the 1st floor of the house is perfect. The organization of the kitchen/dining area/living area is just right and we have the office appropriately out-of-the-way for privacy. And while the two upstairs bedrooms/bath/reading areas are typically vacant, we’ve put an exercise bike in one of the rooms. And our kids/guests love the privacy of the layout. Personally, I think four would be fine. Five? That’s starting to stretch things — not so much from a sleeping/bathroom angle, but the living/tv and kitchen areas could get snug. And with all that said — don’t forget that there’s more room on the 2nd floor to utilize. The utility room off the reading area is where the ERV is located and has to be 10x10ish. There’s also space above the MBR “wing” accessible through the ERV room. You definitely could do something cool with that….
I’ll have to get with the architect and see if he can change these plans up just slightly to work for our family. I love your custom kitchen and am assuming that cost an arm and a leg to get the custom cabinets made. Love the appliances as well! Basically just love everything about it. The things that I think would work better for our family is actually having a laundry room, instead of closet. Maybe having a back pantry area where your mudroom is to allow for more space in kitchen…things like that. I don’t know! Is there anything you would change after being in it for a while now? I notice you don’t have a back door on the house to get out that way.
Your home is absolutely beautiful!! I love everything about it. Thanks for sharing your story! I was wondering if you have any pictures or sketches of the final 2nd floor of the barn/garage? Do you think it would be large enough to accommodate a guest living area? Studio with kitchen maybe?

Thanks, Jamie. The entry way at Dash Landing has worked well. The entry and the mud room are essentially “one space.” And while it wasn’t planned, having that dog shower area makes it a great place to put snowy boots, running shoes, etc. to dry off.

There’s probably room for a snug guest living area. The biggest challenge will be the roof eaves, but overall — workable.
