A House In A Field

Rock hammers.

“If it weren’t for the rocks in its bed, the stream would have no song” – Carl Perkins

One rock at a time, but it’s adding up to something nice.

Beginning of the stone wall

Very simple, but one of our favorite parts of the new house. The wall will edge a small bluestone patio

The front of the wall will be the back of a little fire pit

Front Door, Part 2 : The Final Round

We’re not sure if this is technically a playoff, sweet something or final something.  (Seriously — we don’t know.  Our co-editor is clueless without resorting to  “Let me call Johnny.”)

But we’ve got to decide this door color by Friday and it’s down to two choices.  The poll is at the bottom.

Here you go :

1. Barnstable Red – The absolute runaway winner of the first round.  Steamrolled everyone else in an almost unseemly manner.  This is the color of the garage / barn thingy and the working theory is that it would visually connect the two buildings.  And let’s face it, it would appear that many of you are big fans of red doors.  (Too many visits to Talbots with your Moms…)

2.  Chinese Blue – Yes, this is really the name of the Sherwin-William’s color.  We probably had a dozen people give us the feedback “I liked blue, but would like more of a blue-gray.”  We listened and this is it.  Just a pop of something different.

We’re sensing new nicknames…

Unlike say…..gorgeous cupolas…..this is a part of the project that has always been a “must do.”

And as an added bonus, we’re pretty sure that we’ve got new nicknames.

Office cabinets and desks with long stories…

These cabinets (aka “Flyingpointroad.com World HQ”) :

Thank God for mudders.

Anyone who has hung even the smallest piece of sheetrock is probably looking at these photos and silently thinking “Thank God for mudders.”

Arguably the hardest part of any construction / home improvement project.  Working on stilts for most of the day.  Fixing the drywall hangers work.  Alternating between sloppy and dusty.  And your work redefines “visible.”  Even the smallest light-catching flaw will ruin a whole ceiling and your contractor’s day.

Dennis will be with us for about a week.  Works by himself.  Likes to duct-tape into his stilts.  Leaves a little puddle of drywall compound inside each room to monitor the humidity.  Doesn’t care for the radio.

All you can hear is the steady whiz of the taping knife and a gentle tap against the hawk.

Thank God for mudders.

We need your help. Today. Now. Please.

The decisions don’t want to stop.  And as a “thank-you” for surviving this blog’s 174 prior posts (!), we’d like to invite you to participate in the grand (mis) adventure called “Dash Landing.”

We need your help picking a front door color.

Through the magic of horrible photoshop skills, you’ll see four choices below.  You’ll also find a handy poll.  As an added bonus, we’ve included another shot of the whole complex just to remind you that there’s a lot of red sitting right next to the white house :

1.  Barnstable Red – As most of you know, this is also the color of the garage / barn thingy.  Painting the door this color would be a nice visual connection between the two buildings.  And — for the practical among us — makes buying paint a breeze.

2. Natural – No paint on this one.  We’d just polyurethane the door and let it be natural wood.  Simple, classy, nice.

3. Historical Blue – Just for kicks, we put the Barnstable Red of the garage / barn thingy through an on-line color palette generator.  This is one of the “complimentary color” suggestions that popped up.

4. WestonFlax – Another nice suggestion from a trusted source.  A bit of a “historical” angle here.  (And the real color is a bit darker than what is shown below.)

Please vote today.  And vote often.

The magic of v-board pine.

We weren’t quite sure how to finish off this wall in the garage/barn thingy.  Using drywall seemed way too fussy.  And plywood just wouldn’t have looked “right.”

John suggested simple pine v-board, smooth side out.  And it looks awesome.  We’ll have a big rolling barn door that’ll cover the opening.
